Annual report (2012–2013)

This report describes the activities of Wikimedia District of Columbia during Fiscal Year 2012–13, covering the period from October 2012 through September 2013.

Our programs

In Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC conducted outreach and educational programs in four distinct areas:

Academic and educational outreach

Wikimedia DC continued to develop partnerships with local academic and educational institutions, holding collaborative events with the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and the Economic History Association.

Cultural outreach

Wikimedia DC strengthened and expanded its flagship partnerships with the National Archives and the Smithsonian Institution, holding numerous joint events with each institution. In addition, Wikimedia DC held events at the Washington D.C. Historical Society and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.

Government outreach and engagement

Wikimedia DC began to reach out to government institutions and related organizations, collaborating with the National Library of Medicine and the Cato Institute. Wikimedia DC also conducted direct outreach to congressional staff and other government personnel.

Public outreach and education

Wikimedia DC continued to hold public editing workshops as well as general outreach events throughout the year, hosting a variety of event types including photo expeditions, salons, meetups, picnics, and receptions.

Activities and events

First quarter (October 2012 – December 2012)

During the first quarter of the fiscal year, Wikimedia DC held edit-a-thons at the National Museum of Natural History, the University of Maryland, and George Washington University. In December, Wikimedia DC hosted a showcase of the finalists from the Wiki Loves Monuments USA 2012 contest at the National Press Club.

Second quarter (January 2013 – March 2013)

During the second quarter of the fiscal year, Wikimedia DC expanded its collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, holding edit-a-thons at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Archives of American Art. Other events included edit-a-thons hosted by the University of Maryland and the Washington D.C. Historical Society, and a workshop held at the Cato Institute.

Third quarter (April 2013 – June 2013)

During the third quarter of the fiscal year, Wikimedia DC held its flagship event for the year, the GLAM Boot Camp. Held at the National Archives, the GLAM Boot Camp was a three-day outreach training workshop for a group of Wikimedians selected from across the United States, and was attended by senior representatives of key cultural institutions, including David Ferriero, the Archivist of the United States.

In addition, Wikimedia DC held edit-a-thons at numerous academic, cultural, and government institutions, including George Washington University, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, National Library of Medicine, and the National Museum of Natural History.

In April, Wikimedia DC inaugurated the WikiSalon, an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts to discuss free knowledge and culture topics and collaboratively edit Wikimedia projects. In June, Wikimedia DC hosted the 2013 Great American Wiknic in Meridian Hill Park.

Fourth quarter (July 2013 – September 2013)

During the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, Wikimedia DC continued its ongoing partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, holding edit-a-thons at the Luce Foundation Center for American Art and the Lunder Conservation Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In September, Wikimedia DC representatives attended the annual meeting of the Economic History Association and presented on several topics, including Wikidata and Wikisource.

During the Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the United States, Wikimedia DC once again served as the principal organizational sponsor, providing the technical infrastructure and logistical support for the contest, as well as organizing photo expeditions in Baltimore and Richmond. Wikimedia DC also continued its successful social outreach programs, holding numerous WikiSalons and social meetups to reach out to Wikimedians in the DC area.

Organizational development

Membership

At the end of Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC had 61 members in good standing, corresponding to a 7% increase from the beginning of the year.

Governance

During Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC continued to emphasize good governance practices as a key element of organizational growth. Over the course of the year, Wikimedia DC enacted a new Expense Reimbursement Policy and a revised Conflict of Interest Policy.

Finances

At the end of Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC held $6,974.61 in assets, including both cash and capital assets, with no current liabilities. Over the course of the year, Wikimedia DC recognized revenues of $11,316 and expenses of $19,870.48.

Fundraising

In Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC raised a total of $11,330 from all sources. Of this amount, $2,750 (24.3%) was received from the Wikimedia Foundation and $8,580 (75.7%) was raised from independent sources. The independently-raised funding corresponds to 43.2% of total Wikimedia DC expenditures during the fiscal year.

Grantmaking

As part of our charitable activities, Wikimedia DC provides small grants to individuals, community groups, and nonprofit organizations to fund activities that align with our mission to advance general knowledge and to collect, develop, and disseminate educational content under a free license or in the public domain.

In Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC received eight grant applications with a total value of $4,797.83 from individuals and organizations across the United Statesd. Based on these applications, seven grants (corresponding to 87.5% of the submitted applications) with a total value of $3,528 (corresponding to 73.5% of the total amount requested) were approved and funded. The grants provided by Wikimedia DC were used to fund activities and events in DC, Boston, Chicago, and Seattle.

Wikimedia DC programs are made possible in part by the generous contributions of our members. In Fiscal Year 2012–13, Wikimedia DC inaugurated a tiered sponsor membership program, which allowed members to donate additional funds to support Wikimedia DC activities when establishing or renewing their memberships.
