This Wikipedia Edit-a-thon accompanies the exhibition, In the Library: The Evans-Tibbs Archive of African American Art, which showcases the life and work of Thurlow Evans Tibbs Jr., an accomplished art appraiser, broker, collector, and dealer, as well as the founder and director of his eponymous art gallery in Washington, DC. Tibbs is best known for his donation to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, now an important part of the National Gallery’s holdings by African American artists. To support his research, Tibbs amassed approximately more than a thousand reference files comprising more than seventy boxes of material documenting art of the African diaspora. During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. We're asking editors to make 19 edits around the 19th Amendment throughout the month of August.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Women's Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States. The National Agricultural Library(NAL), one of the world's largest agricultural research libraries, was established as part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1862, by Abraham Lincoln. The library was originally located at the headquarters building of the USDA until centralization of the library, and it's vast collections outgrew the Washington D.C. space. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson authorized an appropriation which enabled the Library to move and build a new 14-story building on site at the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Beltsville,MD.

Did you know that less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women? Throughout the Smithsonian’s nearly 175-year history, women have worked in the sciences, paving the way for future generations at the Institution and in their fields. The stories of these American women can inform and inspire, but only if you can find them.

The National Agricultural Library invites Wikipedians of all levels of experience to participate in this edit-a-thon. Topics will include past librarians, USDA research discoveries and developments, the evolution of technology in conjunction with libraries, and highlights of notable research and research contributions represented within the library's special collections and stacks holdings.

Join our #BecauseOfHerStory effort to improve representation on Wikipedia of these Smithsonian groundbreakers who have been pioneers in various disciplines, from astrophysics to zoology.

During the event individuals will be able to hear from and meet influential historians within the USDA, librarians, and data science experts. They will also have the opportunity to learn more about resources available through ARS and the National Agricultural Library.
