Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.
During this training, attendees will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in STEM in the United States in connection with Ada Lovelace Day - an international event recognizing the achievements of women in STEM. Beginners are very welcome and a range of Wikipedia editing techniques will be taught, with Wikimedia DC members on hand to help! We will also have a set of images to upload to Wikimedia Commons for those who wish to learn the process of uploading and inserting images into Wikipedia pages.
This is the third edit-a-thon in a series planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States. #BecauseOfHerStory

It’s the 150th Anniversary of John Wesley Powell's Expedition to explore the Colorado and Green Rivers! Come participate in a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help tell the stories of "unsung heroes" of Powell's efforts, drawing on collections held at the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives, especially those of women and Native American collaborators.

Join the American Folklife Center on February 8th for a Edit-A-Thon to expand the online presence of women who documented the world. This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. In 2015, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art conducted an assessment of its collection and ascertained that only 11% of the named artists in its collection self-identified as women. As part of its Women’s Initiative, this number has been increased to 22%. But did you know that only 18% of articles on English-language Wikipedia are about women? Help to change that by joining us for the National Museum of African Art’s African Women Artists Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. We will work together to increase the presence of African women artists on Wikipedia by improving existing articles and creating new ones. This event includes a curator-led tour of the exhibition, I Am… Contemporary Women Artists of Africa.

Did you know that Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that anyone can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries? Data has shown that less than 18% of biographies on English-language Wikipedia are about women. Help to change that by joining us on March 28 for the museum's Women Fiber Artists Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. Attendees will learn how to edit Wikipedia and work together to improve and create Wikipedia articles about women fiber artists.
Training will be provided, and no prior knowledge of fiber artists or Wikipedia editing is required. Please bring your own laptop. Wikimedia DC has two laptops to loan. Reserve one by emailing info@wikimediadc.org.
Prior to the edit-a-thon, attendees are invited to attend the Rug and Textile Appreciation Morning program, The Quilt Phenomenon followed by a tour of the museum. The program 10:30am and the tour at 12:00pm.

Join the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) and Wikipedia's official United States affiliates for a virtual edit-a-thon to help strengthen the quality of the world’s largest online encyclopedia and improve the searchability of historic public radio and television collections in the AAPB. As the first event in an on-going series, this edit-a-thon will cover how to create a Wikipedia user account and edit using common conventions.
The AAPB is a collaboration between the Library of Congress and WGBH Educational Foundation in Boston that coordinates a national effort to preserve and make accessible historic public media programs and original materials created over the past 70+ years. More than 130 stations and originals producers have contributed media that documents America’s cultural, political and scientific history – and so much more.
Leading the edit-a-thon are Ariel Certone, Wikimedia DC's Institutional Partnerships Manager, and Ryn Marchese, AAPB Engagement and Use Manager. National Museum of Women in the Arts Virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Black Artists Matter

NMWA will host its first all-virtual Art+Feminism edit-a-thon focused on improving Wikipedia entries related to notable women artists and art world figures. We will work to enrich the representation of all women artists, with an emphasis on women of African descent whose work is included in NMWA's collection.
This event is part of a global initiative to help right Wikipedia’s gender imbalance. In 2019, at least 4,360 Art+Feminism participants created or enhanced over 31,500 Wikipedia pages.
No experience necessary—just be ready with your computer, a motivation to combat gender bias, and a belief in equal access to quality information resources. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.

Throughout the Smithsonian’s nearly 175-year history, women have worked in the sciences, paving the way for future generations at the Institution and in their fields. The stories of these American women can inform and inspire, but only if you can find them.
