The Wikimania hack-a-thon is an opportunity for technologists and hackers of all backgrounds to meet, discuss MediaWiki development, and collaborate on exciting new projects in the days prior to the Wikimania 2012 conference. Prior experience with the MediaWiki software is not required, and translators with a linguistic background who can help improve language support for Wikimedia technology projects are especially needed.

No Wikipedia editing experience necessary.
As part of the Wikimania 2012 conference, Wikimedia DC is hosting the 2012 Congress of Wikimedians in the United States. The congress is an inaugural event that aims to bring together representatives of Wikimedia chapters and regional groups, national and regional GLAM and outreach coordinators, and other interested Wikipedians and Wikimedians from across the United States, and we invite everyone to join us for an evening of discussion and collaboration.

With October 15th being the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month, this edit-a-thon will focus on content in the upcoming Latino Empowerment Exhibit.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear about local programs and activities from representatives of chapters and regional groups around the country, to help plan nation-wide program coordination and outreach events for the coming year, and to discuss ideas for building a stronger network of local Wikimedian groups across the United States.

|description = Save the date for a virtual edit-a-thon on Women in Finance on Thursday, October 29th from 1:00-3:00pm EST where we will highlight women who have been trailblazers in finance, business, and entrepreneurship. The histories of women in these spaces is not well documented online, but they deserve to be told. Dr. Crystal M. Moten, curator of African American history in the division of Work and History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will speak about her work and the importance of telling her stories at the edit-a-thon.
As part of the Wikimania 2012 conference, Wikimedia DC is hosting a series of workshops to build momentum for the Wikipedia Loves Libraries initiative. The workshops will convene previously-participating and new librarians and Wikipedians in the Washington area to steer direction and brainstorm new project ideas. There will be a workshop for librarians on some of the secret tricks that can be used to become information literate in Wikipedia..

  +
During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in finance and business in the United States. Ariel Cetrone, Wikimedia DC, will lead the Wikipedia tutorial and beginners are welcome. Zoom link will be sent upon registration.
Please visit the '''[http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Loves_Libraries conference website]''' for more information and to add your name to the list of attendees.

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia articles. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science. Content on Wikipedia is not even, currently only 18% of biographies are about women. Help us correct that imbalance by editing articles about women on Wikipedia.

===''Wikimania 2012 Google Opening Reception''===

  +
This event is collaboratively planned by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States and Wikimedia DC, the regional outreach organization for the Wikimedia projects.
All registered Wikimania attendees who will be present in Washington, DC on the evening of July 11 are invited to the Wikimania 2012 Google Opening Reception, held in honor of the World Digital Library. The reception will take place at the Great Hall of the Library of Congress' Thomas Jefferson Building, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM.

  +
The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as an ASL interpreter or captioning, please email BecauseOfHerStory@si.edu.
This is a great opportunity to connect with other Wikimania attendees, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, and individuals from the Washington, DC, area, and to hear about the World Digital Library and how it fits into our global vision. Tours of the Library of Congress will be provided, and two exhibitions will be open to attendees. We'll have beautiful music along with great food and drinks; this will be an amazing event in a spectacular venue, and we look forward to sharing it with you.

|description = Join us for a virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon that helps to highlight more artists and stories like those featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's landmark exhibition ¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now. The exhibition brings together five decades of innovative printmaking by Chicano artists to explore the social justice-rooted artistic tradition and its contemporary legacy. Many of the featured artists came of age during the civil rights era and channeled the period's social activism into assertive aesthetic statements that announced a new political and cultural consciousness among people of Mexican descent in the United States. Learn how to edit and create new Wikipedia articles in this online editing workshop and work to amplify and expand on articles about Chicanx women and LGBTQ+ artists. All levels of technological proficiency welcome.

Over the course of two weeks, the Black in STEM Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon will be used to highlight African Americans STEM professionals, specifically, engineers, computer scientists and women in STEM throughout history.
