The histories of women in these spaces is not well documented online, but they deserve to be told. Dr. Crystal M. Moten, curator of African American history in the division of Work and History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will speak about her work and the importance of telling her stories at the edit-a-thon.

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia articles. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science. Content on Wikipedia is not even, currently only 18% of biographies are about women. Help us correct that imbalance by editing articles about women on Wikipedia.

|description = Join us for a virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon that helps to highlight more artists and stories like those featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's landmark exhibition ¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now. The exhibition brings together five decades of innovative printmaking by Chicano artists to explore the social justice-rooted artistic tradition and its contemporary legacy. Many of the featured artists came of age during the civil rights era and channeled the period's social activism into assertive aesthetic statements that announced a new political and cultural consciousness among people of Mexican descent in the United States. Learn how to edit and create new Wikipedia articles in this online editing workshop and work to amplify and expand on articles about Chicanx women and LGBTQ+ artists. All levels of technological proficiency welcome.

|title = '''Virtual Event''' - From Field to Lab: Writing Wikipedia Histories of the USDA's Women

|time = Time: 11 AM – 3 PM

|place = National Agricultural Library

|address = Via Webex

|description = Join us online via a virtual meeting room to celebrate Galentine's Day the right way by writing Wikipedia articles about women, past and present who have worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Agricultural Research Service, National Agricultural Library and other services falling under the umbrella of the USDA.

On Friday, February 14th, we will be writing articles about USDA's Women in Red. You can join us at any time from 11-3 and from anywhere - a virtual meeting room invite will be sent out a couple days prior to the event to those who register. Feel free to sign in and edit at any time on the 14th for our edit-a-thon (even outside of our time frame) - as long as you sign in on the event page (directions for signing in are on the event page itself)before you start editing we will be able to track our engagement and impact. We will have an Ethernet Pad set up so folks signing in can share who they're working on, and so we can ensure that we're not creating multiple drafts for the same folks. You will also be able to use it for questions and assistance.

NAL's Wikipedian-in-Residence, Jamie Flood, and Ariel Cetrone of Wikimedia DC and will be set up in the National Agricultural Library's Multi-Purpose Room to edit, answer questions, and offer assistance to those taking part. If you're on site, please join us for camaraderie, coffee, cookies, and Galentines!

|description = In 2015, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art conducted an assessment of its collection and ascertained that only 11% of the named artists in its collection self-identified as women. As part of its Women’s Initiative, this number has been increased to 22%. But did you know that only 18% of articles on English-language Wikipedia are about women? Help to change that by joining us for the National Museum of African Art’s African Women Artists Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. We will work together to increase the presence of African women artists on Wikipedia by improving existing articles and creating new ones. |description = The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), enacted by Congress in 2011, is a comprehensive update of federal food safety laws. It addresses preventable foodborne illness, monitors the global food supply chain, and ensures human and animal food safety. Rather than a system that responds to foodborne illness, FSMA works to prevent it. Following its enactment, the FDA created seven comprehensive new regulations to enforce the law. These regulations touch on nearly every aspect of the food supply chain.
|description = Join us for a fully remote Wikipedia editing training session. Learn about Wikipedia's policies and the basics of editing.

  +
We will start the day with remarks from Paul Wester, Director of the National Agricultural Library, and follow with a panel of guests who will speak about the history, context, and future of FSMA. Following the speakers, we will hold a training session for those new to - or need a refresher on - Wikipedia editing. A worklist of FSMA topics and pages will be provided, including growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce; mandatory controls for food facilities; and monitoring and corrective action of intentional adulteration of food.
This workshop will take place on Zoom. Attendees will receive a dedicated link to Zoom prior to the workshop. If you don't already have a Wikipedia username, please create one before proceeding to Zoom.

To close the day, we will hold a question and answer session.

|description = The stories of Black women in food can educate and embolden future generations, but only if their legacies are discoverable. On July 27 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Eastern, join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon that will address the marginalization and omission of Black women’s stories by creating or adding to Wikipedia articles about their personal histories and inspiring careers in food businesses, culinary education, writing, advocacy, philanthropy, and beyond.

  +
Don’t know how to edit Wikipedia articles? No worries, we’ll train you during the event! With these new skills, you’ll be able to help us better represent and share the stories of women like LaDeva Davis (featured above) who had her own program on PBS in 1976 called, “What’s Cooking?” During the show, she prepared budget-friendly, highly nutritious meals that appealed to wide audiences. So popular was her show that PBS broadcast it in over 100 locations across the country, making Davis one of the first Black women to have her own nationally syndicated public TV cooking show on PBS.

Honoring her role in food TV history, the museum included Davis’ image on the “TV Chefs Wall” in the FOOD: Transforming the American Table exhibition.
During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in science in the United States in connection with the Funk List.

Did you know that less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women? Throughout the Smithsonian’s nearly 175-year history, women have worked in the sciences, paving the way for future generations at the Institution and in their fields. The stories of these American women can inform and inspire, but only if you can find them.

Join our #BecauseOfHerStory effort to improve representation on Wikipedia of these Smithsonian groundbreakers who have been pioneers in various disciplines, from astrophysics to zoology.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution Archives and the Smithsonian American Women's Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.
