This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. Take this opportunity to get involved with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC) and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative by joining us for the WikiAPA Edit-a-thon: Are Here Edition. This edition focuses on the stories of Pacific Islander and Asian American women, and nonbinary, transgender, and third gender people in APAC’s forthcoming anthology, We Are here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Shaped the United States, which will come out on October 18, 2022, from the Smithsonian Institution and Running Press Kids.

This workshop will take place on Zoom. Attendees will receive a dedicated link to Zoom prior to the workshop. If you don't already have a Wikipedia username, please create one before proceeding to Zoom.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who are looking to learn about art, history, and science. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. There are considerable gaps on Wikipedia related to Asian American and Pacific Islander history as well as topics about transgender and nonbinary people. You can help correct these imbalances by contributing to Wikipedia.

This workshop is presented by Wikimedia DC, the DC region's official Wikipedia affiliate, but is open to all regardless of location.

During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. No prior Wikipedia experience is required.

Wikimedia DC will continue to offer remote workshops over the course of the next few weeks. Like our regular in-person events, these may be themed or presented in conjunction with area museums, agencies, institutions, and organizations.

As one of the internet’s most frequently visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many interested in learning about art, history, and the lives of artists. Yet many women artists whose important works are displayed in museums and galleries around the world have incomplete Wikipedia articles or no article at all. Sculptors are even less represented than painters in Wikipedia, increasing the likelihood of women sculptors being excluded. This problem can be corrected. Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that we can all help improve the quantity, quality, and accuracy of Wikipedia entries.
