Description of purpose

Please tell us a little about the project or activity for which you are requesting funding. Please provide enough detail to allow us to evaluate how your request aligns with our charitable mission.

I am a graduate student at UC San Diego in Communication and Science Studies. I am currently a Visiting Graduate Researcher at the University of Washington in the Department of Communication. I am organizing a critical edit-a-thon at the University of Washington with Amanda Menking, a doctoral student in the University of Washington Information School.

Event details: Title: 'I Love To You': Critical Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Date: February 14, 2015, 9:30am - 1:30pm. Purpose: This event aims to address the gender gap on Wikipedia through a community-building conversation and hands-on editing session. The four-hour event will bring together dialogues in feminist theory that serve to address missing voices on Wikipedia with an editing session. The event is open to the public. Outreach efforts will be most concentrated at the University of Washington and will include classroom visits, social media and listserv publicity, personalized invitations to graduate students, faculty and staff, and paper flyers.

The organizers are members of the Cascadia Wikimedians User Group, which is affiliated as a sponsor. Other local Wikimedians have volunteered to participate in the event and assist with the hands on component of the edit-a-thon.

Current affiliated sponsors: UW Research Commons, UW Communication Department, Cascadia Wikimedians User Group. Ongoing partnership efforts by the organizers include invitations for sponsorship, publicity, and attendance to the UW Women's and Gender Studies program, the UW iSchool, the UW Human Centered Design and Engineering.

(5) What is the purpose for which the funding will be used?

Funding will help us offset the cost of childcare and refreshments. A detailed budget is below. We are prioritizing childcare in our budget to ensure that care work, a burden which often falls on the shoulders of women, does not impede participation in the event.

(6) How does this purpose align with our mission?

The Wikimedia Foundation has prioritized addressing the gender gap among English-language editors in order to achieve the Wikipedia vision of an engaged, diversity of contributors to help improve articles and content. Supporting 'I Love To You': Critical Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is an opportunity for the Wikimedia Foundation to align with an outreach project that seeks to addresses the gender gap in a critical and generative fashion. Our event will provide both a training session which draws on existing Wikipedia educational resources and energies, which may invite new participants, and will be a community building conversation about how to address systemic bias beyond individual contributors.
