Personal information

Please tell us a little about yourself. If you are uncomfortable with posting any of the requested information publicly, please contact the Grants Committee for assistance.

(1) What is your name?

Dominic McDevitt-Parks

(2) What is your email address?

mcdevitdatgmail.com

(3) Do you currently reside in the United States? If not, please specify your country of residence.

Yes.

(4) Are you requesting this grant on behalf of an organization or group? If so, please provide the name of the group.

No.

Description of purpose

Please tell us a little about the project or activity for which you are requesting funding. Please provide enough detail to allow us to evaluate how your request aligns with our charitable mission.

(5) What is the purpose for which the funding will be used?

I am requesting funds in order to assist in a workshop at the annual Museum Computer Network conference.. The full-day workshop, "Wikimedia Tech Workshop: Bridging the Gap" was proposed by Lori Phillips and has already been accepted by the conference organizers. I am listed in the description as one of the facilitators, and have been a part of the plan for this workshop from the beginning. I was going to attend the event using National Archives travel funds, but that is no longer possible since my position there abruptly came to an end. Now I am searching quickly for a funding source so that I can still go. Specifically, funding is required for airfare, conference registration, and possibly accommodations.

(6) How does this purpose align with our mission?

This will be a unique workshop designed to do outreach with the technical people of the museum world, rather than just the curatorial staff. Other participants, including Erik Moeller, Ben Lobaugh, and User:Amgine will provide MediaWiki expertise for the workshop, but my role is to assist by providing the knowledge of cultural institutions and their needs, and experience in past GLAM projects with Wikimedia. This event will further GLAM partnerships nationally—especially through enabling participating institutions to help develop their own technical solutions—and my participation will ensure it is a success.

Grant financials

Please tell us a little about the funding you need. To expedite review of your application, please provide as much detail as possible.

(7) How much funding do you need?

Approximately $550.

(8) When will you need funding?

The event is quite soon, starting November 7. I would be fine with being reimbursed later as long as I know I will be reimbursed before I have to purchase my flight and registration. This request is very last-minute, though, so I would have to know in a few days.

(9) What specific costs will the funding cover?
Conference registration: $250
Airfare (BWI-SEA): ~$300 (not yet booked)
I have not included a request for lodging to be covered at this time under the assumption I can share a hotel room with other attendees.
