Distinguished Service Award

Wikimedia District of Columbia awards its Distinguished Service Award to Veronica Erb of National Public Radio. She has organized three edit-a-thons with Wikimedia DC and has volunteered at our other events. Her events, which focused on such themes as Black History and Hispanic Heritage, invited newcomers to make their first edit. These events pioneered a novel way of teaching people how to edit Wikipedia: a newcomer would pair with an experienced editor, choose a small editing task from a bowl based on recommended tasks curated ahead of time, and work together to make the first edit. This form of guided work holds promise for Wikimedia DC’s future programs. For her work to advance the understanding of Wikipedia and her work to improve on Wikimedia outreach programs, we recognize Veronica with the Distinguished Service Award.

Volunteer of the Year

Wikimedia District of Columbia awards its Volunteer of the Year Award to Gerald Shields and Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight.

Gerald regularly participates at Wikimedia DC events, often as the event photographer.
