Wikimedia District of Columbia (Wikimedia DC) is looking to appoint two new members to the Board of Directors as part of its expansion from seven to nine directors. This board expansion will help Wikimedia DC expand and diversify its skill sets as it looks to grow as an organization and play a more active role in the community it serves.

Who we are

Wikimedia DC is an official affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that runs Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikimedia DC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that directly serves the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and West Virginia, and provides organizational and financial support for volunteer activities and initiative throughout the United States, including the Art+Feminism initiative. Locally in DC, we work with cultural institutions, universities, and other promoters of knowledge to improve Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia Foundation projects through edit-a-thons, training events, and other outreach events. Past and present partners include the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. National Archives, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Howard University, and the National Institutes of Health. We make small grants available to members of our community interested in working to improve Wikipedia, and we also provide training opportunities for Wikipedia editors interested in developing their skills as volunteers to the broader Wikimedia movement.

What we are looking for

As a member of our Board of Directors, you will play a central role in helping Wikimedia DC develop as an organization as we look to accommodate growing interest in our organization and its services. We are looking for volunteer directors with experience in:

  • Fundraising
  • Volunteer community development
  • Nonprofit governance, including the transition from an all-volunteer organization to one with paid staff

Experience with underrepresented and marginalized communities is a plus. Wikimedia DC is dedicated to increasing the diversity of content on, and contributors to, Wikipedia.

Board members are expected to participate in a 2–3 hour meeting every other month, usually held on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Board members can participate remotely and do not necessarily need to be based in the Washington, DC area. Outside of meetings, board members are expected to spend approximately two hours per month following emails and preparing for meetings. Board members are volunteers and are not compensated for their services.
