Wiki Loves Pride is a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content across several Wikimedia projects. The activities of Wiki Loves Pride are focused on June and October, traditionally the months when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities around the world celebrate LGBT culture and history. June 2014 will see the first Wiki Loves Pride campaign, spearheaded by Dorothy Howard and Jason Moore. It is supported by Wikimedia LGBT, a proposed Wkimedia user group that promotes the development of content which is of interest to LGBT communities. Anyone is welcome to participate. We believe this campaign is one way to engage and empower LGBT communities to develop content under a free license or in the public domain, and to encourage LGBT organizations to use Wikimedia proects and adopt the values of free culture and open access.

In Portland, an edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from noon-4pm at Portland State University. It is being hosted en:User:Another Believer and PSU's Queer Resource Center. Our goals are to identify articles needing to be created or improved, spend time developing content and uploading pictures, sharing resources with one another (LGBT or otherwise) and training new contributors how to edit Wikipedia.

In New York City, an edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from 11-4pm at Jefferson Market Library in Greenwich Village. It is being hosted by Wiki Loves Pride, NYPL, and the Metropolitan New York Library Council.

(5) What is the purpose for which the funding will be used?
Snacks and beverages for edit-a-thon attendees
(6) How does this purpose align with our mission?

The purpose of Wiki Loves Pride is to develop LGBT-related content at Wikipedia and its sister projects, simultaneously increasing the pool of knowledge in the Wikimedia projects and interjecting diversity. WLP events will be held in other cities, including New York City and Washington, D.C.

Comments

  • Thank you for your consideration. This is my first time submitting a grant request within the Wikimedia universe, through Wikimedia DC or otherwise, so please let me know if you require any additional information. I am happy to address any concerns. --Another Believer (talk) 18:06, 10 June 2014 (EDT)
    • This request was originally submitted for just Portland, but it was expanded to include NYC. Just for clarification purposes. Thanks again. --Another Believer (talk) 12:49, 12 June 2014 (EDT)

Approval

I approve this grant, but to administer it I will ask for separate grant reports for the New York event (to be filed by Dorothy) and the Portland event (to be filed by Jason). James Hare (talk) 14:58, 12 June 2014 (EDT)

Not a problem. Thank you so much! --Another Believer (talk) 15:28, 12 June 2014 (EDT)
