Have you ever wondered how scientists make our food supply safer, more nutritious, more abundant, and more sustainable? Learn more while improving the accuracy and quality of online information about sustainability in food and agriculture as a participant in a Wikipedia edit-a-thon!
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS) and Wikimedia DC invite Wikipedians of all levels of experience to participate in this Farm-to-Fork Sustainability Edit-a-thon. Topics will include plant and animal production, pest management, bioproducts, and agroecosystem conservation practices. During the event, participants will have the opportunity to meet ARS scientists, librarians, and data science experts. They will also learn more about resources available through ARS and its National Agricultural Library.
About your hosts: ARS is USDA’s chief scientific in-house research agency, with more than 90 locations throughout the United States and overseas. The agency’s research spans crop and animal production and protection, natural resource management, food safety and quality, and nutrition. Wikimedia DC is the regional outreach organization for Wikipedia and other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, promoting participation on Wikimedia projects throughout the United States. Join us at the Catholic Information Center as we gather to edit articles on parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington in honor of the Feast of St. Jerome, patron saint of translators, librarians, and encyclopedists. There is a rich institutional history of the Catholic Church here in the Archdiocese dating all the way back to John Carroll, the first Bishop and Archbishop in the United States. Our goal is to make that history known on the world's largest online encyclopedia.
Attendees will learn to edit Wikipedia and use online and print sources to update related Wikipedia articles. Experienced Wikipedians will be on hand to provide training and guidance. There will also be some librarians available to help with research.

This event is presented by 500 Women Scientists DC. Ada Lovelace Day is an international day to celebrate the contributions of self-identifying women to science, technology, engineering, and math. So to celebrate their achievements, 500 Women Scientists and our allies, as well as the DC Science Writer's Association, are gathering at the West End DC Public Library on Saturday, October 13th to share their work on Wikipedia's pages.
While Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, notching up more than 32 million views a day, less than 18% of its English-language biographies are about women. So in honor of Ada Lovelace—and her contributions to mathematics and computing—we'll work to add more entries to Wikipedia and give you the tools to keep making the Internet less sexist after our Wiki-thon. All you have to do is come armed with a laptop or tablet!

This Wikipedia Edit-a-thon accompanies the exhibition, In the Library: The Evans-Tibbs Archive of African American Art, which showcases the life and work of Thurlow Evans Tibbs Jr., an accomplished art appraiser, broker, collector, and dealer, as well as the founder and director of his eponymous art gallery in Washington, DC. Tibbs is best known for his donation to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, now an important part of the National Gallery’s holdings by African American artists. To support his research, Tibbs amassed approximately more than a thousand reference files comprising more than seventy boxes of material documenting art of the African diaspora. Tibbs opened up his reference collection, now commonly known as the Evans-Tibbs Archive, to artists, students, and scholars. The archive includes correspondence, exhibition pamphlets, gallery records, photographs, and other ephemera that illustrate the history of the Tibbs family, The Evans-Tibbs Collection, and African American art.
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. Reference materials from the library’s collection and the Evans-Tibbs Archive will be readily available.

Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.
Let’s change that. Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, as well as reference materials, coffee and lunch. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. Did you know that Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that anyone can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries? Data has shown that less than 18% of biographies on English-language Wikipedia are about women. Help us change that by joining us on February 9 at the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument for a Wikipedia editing workshop. We will work together to improve and create Wikipedia content about black women who fought for the right to vote. Training will be provided, and no prior knowledge of suffrage history or wikipedia editing is required.

Join us at Ford's Theatre to help improve and create Wikipedia articles related to Lincoln's assassination. There were nearly 2,000 witnesses and thousands of other individuals whose responses to the assassination provide a rich illustration of a country reeling from unprecedented tragedy. This edit-a-thon will focus on bringing some of those stories to light.
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. Training will be provided.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Snacks will be provided.
