Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.

During this training, attendees will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in STEM in the United States in connection with Ada Lovelace Day - an international event recognizing the achievements of women in STEM. Beginners are very welcome and a range of Wikipedia editing techniques will be taught, with Wikimedia DC members on hand to help! We will also have a set of images to upload to Wikimedia Commons for those who wish to learn the process of uploading and inserting images into Wikipedia pages.

This is the third edit-a-thon in a series planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States. #BecauseOfHerStory

No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided.

It’s the 150th Anniversary of John Wesley Powell's Expedition to explore the Colorado and Green Rivers! Come participate in a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help tell the stories of "unsung heroes" of Powell's efforts, drawing on collections held at the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives, especially those of women and Native American collaborators.

No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Training and refreshments will be provided. Training in Wikipedia editing techniques will take place from 11am to 12:30pm, followed by a break for lunch. Open editing time will run from 1:30-4:30. If you've never edited before, please plan to arrive at 11 for a fabulous training session.

Join the American Folklife Center on February 8th for a Edit-A-Thon to expand the online presence of women who documented the world. This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. We will focus of those whose collections are now housed in the AFC archive. Activities will be centered at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, but off-site participation is encouraged. AFC staff will be on hand to assist on-site and off-site researchers and provide archival materials.

Join us online via a virtual meeting room to celebrate Galentine's Day the right way by writing Wikipedia articles about women, past and present who have worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Agricultural Research Service, National Agricultural Library and other services falling under the umbrella of the USDA.

On Friday, February 14th, we will be writing articles about USDA's Women in Red. You can join us at any time from 11-3 and from anywhere - a virtual meeting room invite will be sent out a couple days prior to the event to those who register. Feel free to sign in and edit at any time on the 14th for our edit-a-thon (even outside of our time frame) - as long as you sign in on the event page (directions for signing in are on the event page itself)before you start editing we will be able to track our engagement and impact. We will have an Ethernet Pad set up so folks signing in can share who they're working on, and so we can ensure that we're not creating multiple drafts for the same folks. You will also be able to use it for questions and assistance.

In 2015, the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art conducted an assessment of its collection and ascertained that only 11% of the named artists in its collection self-identified as women. As part of its Women’s Initiative, this number has been increased to 22%. But did you know that only 18% of articles on English-language Wikipedia are about women? Help to change that by joining us for the National Museum of African Art’s African Women Artists Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. We will work together to increase the presence of African women artists on Wikipedia by improving existing articles and creating new ones. This event includes a curator-led tour of the exhibition, I Am… Contemporary Women Artists of Africa.

No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. Editing training will be provided by Wikimedia DC. Museum curators and librarians will be on-hand to provide expertise and source material.

While we will initially focus on women whose work is represented in Library collections, this event is designed to improve articles about any women photojournalists. Anyone with an interest in learning to use Wikipedia, or in researching women in the arts, is encouraged to attend. Library of Congress staff are excited to share their expertise on Library collections that bring women photojournalists and their work to life.

No experience with Wikipedia is necessary. Training will be provided by a DC area Wikipedian. (We also welcome active Wikipedia editors!)

The event is free, but we ask people to register to help us estimate attendance.

Women Fiber Artists Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Did you know that Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that anyone can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries? Data has shown that less than 18% of biographies on English-language Wikipedia are about women. Help to change that by joining us on March 28 for the museum's Women Fiber Artists Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. Attendees will learn how to edit Wikipedia and work together to improve and create Wikipedia articles about women fiber artists.

Training will be provided, and no prior knowledge of fiber artists or Wikipedia editing is required. Please bring your own laptop. Wikimedia DC has two laptops to loan. Reserve one by emailing info@wikimediadc.org.

Prior to the edit-a-thon, attendees are invited to attend the Rug and Textile Appreciation Morning program, The Quilt Phenomenon followed by a tour of the museum. The program 10:30am and the tour at 12:00pm.

Women’s Suffrage Centennial Wikipedia Editing Workshop

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States, as well as suffrage efforts in Virginia, at the Virtual Women’s Suffrage Centennial Wikipedia Editing Workshop.

With the help of experienced Wikipedians, attendees will learn to edit Wikipedia and improve or create Wikipedia articles related to the women’s suffrage movement in the U.S. and Virginia, all from the comfort of your own home. No editing experience is necessary.
