Wikimedia DC collaborates with cultural institutions, including galleries, libraries, archives, and museums, to promote free knowledge and support digitization and open access projects.
National Archives: With the assistance of their Wikipedian-in-Residence, we have supported several events at the National Archives, including the ExtravaSCANza in 2012. We also work with WikiProject FedFlix, in collaboration with Carl Malamud of public.resource.org and the International Amateur Scanning League, to digitize video and other materials in the holdings of the National Archives and other government agencies. The WikiProject is working to get the video and materials made available on Wikimedia Commons, transcribe them, and available for use on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. David Ferriero, the Archivist of the United States, was the closing keynote speaker of Wikimania 2012 at George Washington University.
Smithsonian Institution: We work closely with staff from the Smithsonian Institution to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the Smithsonian collections and research, including history, science, art, and culture. The Smithsonian has held numerous editathons and workshops, with the support of Wikimedia DC, teaching staff about how to contribute to Wikipedia. During 2011, Wikipedia editor Sarah Stierch served as the Wikipedian-in-Residence at the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art (details) and the Smithsonian Institution Archives. During the summer of 2013, Dominic McDevitt-Parks served as the Smithsonian's first centrally hosted Wikipedian-in-Residence.
