Description of purpose

Please tell us a little about the project or activity for which you are requesting funding. Please provide enough detail to allow us to evaluate how your request aligns with our charitable mission.

(5) What is the purpose for which the funding will be used?

The grant will be used to support the Hawaiian cultural edit-a-thon on January 24, 2015. Funds will go to advertising, banners, office supplies, food, t-shirts, "give-a-ways", and other incidentals.

(6) How does this purpose align with our mission?

The Hawaiian edit a thon will greatly improve Wikipedia's coverage of Hawaiian topics which are largely forgotten on Wikipedia. Hawaii is of strategic importance to the United States and international stability but because of its low population and geographic isolation, it receives very few editors interested in improving it. Our event will connect Hawaiians interested in their heritage with Wikipedia and together we can make ground in fixing this hole.

• $100 toward office supplies (Pencils, note pads, pencil sharpeners, highlighters, tape, sign hangers)
• $200 food and drinks
• $192 for flight from Big Island, Hawaii to O'ahu, Hawaii for expert Danny Akaka.
  • Danny Kaniela Akaka, Jr. is a well known cultural historian in Hawaii on Hawaiian culture. He is the son of the retired Hawaii Senator Daniel Akaka. He is the Director of Cultural affairs at the Mauna Lani resort. The Hawaiian culture is a sensitive topic on the mainland and Hawaiians have been unfairly judged by western morals. This has led to a local distrust of western culture to adequately explain Hawaiian culture. Mr. Akaka, Jr. would provide expertise on Hawaiian culture ensuring the topics are met with sensitivity, understanding, and accuracy.
