Description of purpose

Please tell us a little about the project or activity for which you are requesting funding. Please provide enough detail to allow us to evaluate how your request aligns with our charitable mission.

(5) What is the purpose for which the funding will be used?
On April 1, 2015, the North Carolina Collection is hosting an edit-a-thon, which is open to the public, to create and improve Wikipedia articles about American Indians and American Indian history in North Carolina.
(6) How does this purpose align with our mission?
The North Carolina Collection’s edit-a-thon will improve educational content available on Wikipedia and work against systemic bias in editing by encouraging participants to create or improve pages on topics relating to North Carolina’s American Indians, an area which historically has received little coverage in Wikipedia. The NCC also strives to have diversity among its participants by collaborating with a UNC class on Lumbee history, which is taught by a member of the Lumbee tribe; reaching out to student groups like the Carolina Indian Circle, a campus group for American Indian students; and encouraging participation from the University’s School of Information and Library Science, whose demographics skew heavily female.
