This plan covers Wikimedia DC's planned program activities and operations for the 2022–23 fiscal year, which begins on October 1, 2022 and ends on September 30, 2023.

Programs

The Wikimedia DC program portfolio for the 2022–23 fiscal year will continue to be focused around a key program area institutional partnerships, which now includes a growing number of contracts to support software or content development.

The institutional partnership program area includes programs whose principal objective is to leverage the resources, holdings, and expertise of institutions in the cultural, academic, and government sectors to improve the Wikimedia projects and other free knowledge repositories. This is achieved both through the direct contribution of institutional records, collections, and other holdings to such repositories under suitable free licenses, and through the participation of institutional staff and other affiliated individuals in such projects. Most of these events are edit-a-thons or training workshops. Most are online and we welcome remote participants.

Over the course of the 2022–23 fiscal year, we will again collaborate with at least 20 institutional partners, primarily in the form of virtual editing events. We expect to continue to meet the goal that at least 50% of our partnership activities address diversity on Wikimedia, either diversity of content and diversity of participation.

Wikimedia DC is involved in software development, as we help design an experimental tool that will help evaluate English Wikipedia articles on vaccine topics, with the hope of helping reduce misinformation on social media. The project is called ARTT, and is run by a nonprofit called Hacks/Hackers.

Organizational Development

Wikimedia DC organizational development priorities for the 2022–23 fiscal year will focus on two key operational areas: evaluation and reporting and North American and community engagement.

Evaluation and Reporting

We have tended to evaluate our improvements to online Wikimedia works by numbers of editors and edits. We intend to develop the skills in the coming year at evaluating quality improvements, e.g. by using the ORES scoring scheme for edit improvements.

North American and Community Engagement

  • We intend to join with other North American affiliates into a partnership called in WMF parlance a "Hub". This new collaboration should be able to earn a Wikimedia Foundation "Hub" grant, and help us expand our reach, membership, and stabilize our revenue levels. WMDC expects to have a substantial role in running the combined effort.

Chapter strategic plan

We will execute a process to form a new strategic plan for the chapter, as our previous strategic plan has expired.

We anticipate scaling up responsibilities for our Institutional Partnerships Manager to manage (1) the nationwide Hub research, and (2) the chapter's own reporting and finances, during 2023.
