About us

Wikimedia District of Columbia is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the advancement of general knowledge and the collection, development, and dissemination of educational content under a free license or in the public domain. To carry out this mission, Wikimedia DC operates education and outreach programs in the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the states of Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia.
Wikimedia DC is a chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, and supports the work of volunteers on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, along with numerous other free knowledge initiatives.

Get involved

It's easy to get involved with Wikimedia DC:
- Become a member. Joining Wikimedia DC is one of the easiest ways to support our mission. Membership is open to everyone, and there are several convenient registration options available.
- Connect with us online. The best way to stay informed about ongoing programs and upcoming events is to subscribe to the wikimedia-dc mailing list. You can also read our blog, or follow us via social media; we are @wikimediadc on Twitter and wikimediadc on Facebook.
- Participate in local events. Wikimedia hosts a variety of educational and outreach events, from small workshops to large conferences. Most events are open to the public, and everyone is welcome to attend.
- Donate to Wikimedia DC. Your contribution will help provide critical funding for our educational and outreach programs.

Programs

Wikimedia DC operates a number of outreach and educational programs in the DC area and elsewhere:
- Wikipedians-in-Residence: Working to create lasting partnerships between cultural institutions and Wikimedia projects.
- Library Lab: Designing and demonstrating a community space for digital media creation, curation, and publication.
- Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors: Providing face-to-face Wikipedia training and support on university campuses.
- Embassy Outreach Initiative: Engaging the international community in DC through cultural, educational, and professional events.
- Open Government Project: Creating a space for dialogue on open government in the international, national, state, and local communities.
- Professional Outreach and Retention Initiative: Reaching out to the professional and academic community to encourage ongoing contributions to Wikimedia projects.
- Wikimedia Projects in Government: Providing seminars and training workshops on how to utilize Wikimedia projects to support national, state, and local government initiatives.
