+ | |description = Wikipedia is one of the most highly visited websites in the world, but representation of women of color is strikingly low—both in terms of who contributes to the site and the subjects they write about. Many local and national environmental justice women activists are not represented among Wikipedia's many biographies. |
||

− | |description = It’s American Archives Month! Come participate in a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help tell the stories of women “trowelblazers” in the field of anthropology, drawing on collections held at the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives. Learn about the roles women played in some of the field’s major breakthroughs. Get to know anthropologists such as ethnomusicologist Francis Densmore, Standing Rock Sioux anthropologist and activist Beatrice Medicine, archaeologist Rose Solecki, and economic anthropologist Stanley Ann Dunham (mother of Barack Obama). |

This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. We will focus of those whose collections are now housed in the AFC archive. Activities will be centered at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, but off-site participation is encouraged. AFC staff will be on hand to assist on-site and off-site researchers and provide archival materials. |

+ | |description = Wikimedia DC will join WMF Policy experts on an expedition to see the Supreme Court hearing of ''Moody v. NetChoice, LLC'' and ''NetChoice v. Paxton'' cases. They concern moderation of content by online platforms as governed by Section 230. The cases will be heard from 10 AM to noon, one hour each. We believe that we can hear a bit of the session if we line up very early. If you can be in line by 5:30am please join us. It'll be cold and there are no easily available bathrooms so ... prepare as well as possible. |

− | On Friday, February 14th, we will be writing articles about USDA's Women in Red. You can join us at any time from 11-3 and from anywhere - a virtual meeting room invite will be sent out a couple days prior to the event to those who register. Feel free to sign in and edit at any time on the 14th for our edit-a-thon (even outside of our time frame) - as long as you sign in on the event page (directions for signing in are on the event page itself)before you start editing we will be able to track our engagement and impact. We will have an Ethernet Pad set up so folks signing in can share who they're working on, and so we can ensure that we're not creating multiple drafts for the same folks. You will also be able to use it for questions and assistance. |
||
− | |||
− | NAL's Wikipedian-in-Residence, Jamie Flood, and Ariel Cetrone of Wikimedia DC and will be set up in the National Agricultural Library's Multi-Purpose Room to edit, answer questions, and offer assistance to those taking part. If you're on site, please join us for camaraderie, coffee, cookies, and Galentines! |

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Women in Environmental Justice
WHEN
- Wednesday, October 4, 2023
4pm-8pm ET
WHERE
- Anacostia Community Museum
Wikipedia is one of the most highly visited websites in the world, but representation of women of color is strikingly low—both in terms of who contributes to the site and the subjects they write about. Many local and national environmental justice women activists are not represented among Wikipedia's many biographies.
Join us to set the record straight, make some friends, and celebrate the activists who have fought to make our urban environments greener. No Wikipedia editing experience necessary; training will be provided.
This event is planned in coordination with our friends at Wikimedia DC.

Georgetown University Women’s History Month Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
WHEN
- Friday, March 15, 2024
1:30 PM – 4:30 PM
WHERE
- Georgetown University
The theme for Women’s History Month this year at Georgetown University is “It’s all the Rage,” where we will engage feminist rage and emotion from intersectional lenses.
Did you know that only 15% of contributors to Wikipedia are women? Did you know that women only appear in just over 20% of all images of human beings on Wikimedia Commons? Did you know efforts are happening around the world to address the “gender gap” on Wikipedia?
Join the Georgetown community to help close this gender gap on Wikipedia by increasing the representation of underrepresented groups — in both Wikipedia content and contributors — on topics such as women in politics, women in STEM, and women in the arts. There will be hands-on training provided by representatives from Wikimedia DC.
No Wikipedia editing experience necessary.
Bring your own laptop. Snacks will be provided.

WHEN
- Saturday, July 20, 2024
11am-2pm
WHERE
- National Museum of Women in the Arts
Join us for our annual Art+Feminism edit-a-thon to help close information gaps related to gender, feminism, and the arts on Wikipedia. This year, to complement NMWA’s 2024 #5WomenArtists campaign, we will focus on disability activism and advocacy in the arts.
Anyone and everyone interested in learning more about editing Wikipedia, regardless of experience, gender, or background, is welcome to attend. We will provide tutorials, reference materials, internet access, and refreshments. All you need is a laptop, motivation to combat gender bias, and a belief in equal access to quality information resources.
This is a free, in-person event. Registration is required. Please bring your laptop and charger. To share about the event on social media, use the hashtags #ArtAndFeminism, #NowEditingAF, and #5WomenArtists!
This event is in partnership with Wikimedia, DC, the regional outreach organization for Wikipedia.

Until 1974, married women could not get credit cards in their own name. Join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on women, credit, and financial power to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which prohibited lenders from discriminating against consumers based on their sex or marital status.
Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum is working to change that and we need you to help share the stories of women who ensured the success of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and leaders in the banking industry who expanded services for women.
This event will have two parts:
Getting started with Wikipedia edits: 11 am - 12 pm
Wikipedia edit-a-thon: 12 pm - 2 pm
Join in for one or both sessions, but new editors are encouraged to attend the introductory session at 11 am.
