|description = Wikipedia is one of the most highly visited websites in the world, but representation of women of color is strikingly low—both in terms of who contributes to the site and the subjects they write about. Many local and national environmental justice women activists are not represented among Wikipedia's many biographies.

|description = It’s American Archives Month! Come participate in a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help tell the stories of women “trowelblazers” in the field of anthropology, drawing on collections held at the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives. Learn about the roles women played in some of the field’s major breakthroughs. Get to know anthropologists such as ethnomusicologist Francis Densmore, Standing Rock Sioux anthropologist and activist Beatrice Medicine, archaeologist Rose Solecki, and economic anthropologist Stanley Ann Dunham (mother of Barack Obama).

|description = Join the American Folklife Center on February 8th for a Edit-A-Thon to expand the online presence of women who documented the world. This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. We will focus of those whose collections are now housed in the AFC archive. Activities will be centered at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, but off-site participation is encouraged. AFC staff will be on hand to assist on-site and off-site researchers and provide archival materials.

Feel free to sign in and edit at any time on the 14th for our edit-a-thon (even outside of our time frame) - as long as you sign in on the event page (directions for signing in are on the event page itself)before you start editing we will be able to track our engagement and impact. We will have an Ethernet Pad set up so folks signing in can share who they're working on, and so we can ensure that we're not creating multiple drafts for the same folks. You will also be able to use it for questions and assistance.

Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? Help change that by joining the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on June 20th for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Attendees will edit and create Wikipedia articles inspired by the life and work of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker.

  +
Dr. Walker, the first woman to serve as a U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War, a women’s rights advocate, and the only woman recipient of the Medal of Honor, is featured on a new quarter as part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters Program.
|description = Did you know that Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that anyone can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries? Data has shown that less than 18% of biographies on English-language Wikipedia are about women.   +
2) Wikipedia edit-a-thon: 12pm-2pm

  +

|description = Join the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) and Wikipedia's official United States affiliates for a virtual edit-a-thon to help strengthen the quality of the world’s largest online encyclopedia and improve the searchability of historic public radio and television collections in the AAPB. As the first event in an on-going series, this edit-a-thon will cover how to create a Wikipedia user account and edit using common conventions.

The AAPB is a collaboration between the Library of Congress and WGBH Educational Foundation in Boston that coordinates a national effort to preserve and make accessible historic public media programs and original materials created over the past 70+ years. More than 130 stations and originals producers have contributed media that documents America’s cultural, political and scientific history – and so much more.

Leading the edit-a-thon are Ariel Certone, Wikimedia DC's Institutional Partnerships Manager, and Ryn Marchese, AAPB Engagement and Use Manager. The event will focus on updating the Wikipedia records of AAPB Participating Organizations in order to include information about their contributed programs in the AAPB.

|description = Help us increase coverage of the 19th Amendment and women in the suffrage movement on Wikipedia by making 19 edits during the month of August.

  +
This event will have two parts:
This year marks 100 years since the adoption of the 19th Amendment which gave some American women the right to vote. Help us close the gap in articles about the 19th Amendment and women's role in the suffrage movement. Editing will be open throughout the month of August with Zoom training / office hours every Tuesday & Thursday from 11:30am - 1:00pm Eastern in August!

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.

Did you know that less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women? Throughout the Smithsonian’s nearly 175-year history, women have worked in the sciences, paving the way for future generations at the Institution and in their fields. The stories of these American women can inform and inspire, but only if you can find them.

Join our #BecauseOfHerStory effort to improve representation on Wikipedia of these Smithsonian groundbreakers who have been pioneers in various disciplines, from astrophysics to zoology.

|description = Save the date for a virtual edit-a-thon on Women in Finance on Thursday, October 29th from 1:00-3:00pm EST where we will highlight women who have been trailblazers in finance, business, and entrepreneurship. The histories of women in these spaces is not well documented online, but they deserve to be told. Dr. Crystal M. Moten, curator of African American history in the division of Work and History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will speak about her work and the importance of telling her stories at the edit-a-thon.

During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in finance and business in the United States. Ariel Cetrone, Wikimedia DC, will lead the Wikipedia tutorial and beginners are welcome. Zoom link will be sent upon registration.

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia articles. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science. Content on Wikipedia is not even, currently only 18% of biographies are about women. Help us correct that imbalance by editing articles about women on Wikipedia.

This event is collaboratively planned by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States and Wikimedia DC, the regional outreach organization for the Wikimedia projects.

The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as an ASL interpreter or captioning, please email BecauseOfHerStory@si.edu.
