|description = Save the date for a virtual edit-a-thon on Women in Finance on Thursday, October 29th from 1:00-3:00pm EST where we will highlight women who have been trailblazers in finance, business, and entrepreneurship. The histories of women in these spaces is not well documented online, but they deserve to be told. Dr. Crystal M. Moten, curator of African American history in the division of Work and History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will speak about her work and the importance of telling her stories at the edit-a-thon.

During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in finance and business in the United States. Ariel Cetrone, Wikimedia DC, will lead the Wikipedia tutorial and beginners are welcome. Zoom link will be sent upon registration.

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia articles. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science. Content on Wikipedia is not even, currently only 18% of biographies are about women. Help us correct that imbalance by editing articles about women on Wikipedia.

This event is collaboratively planned by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States and Wikimedia DC, the regional outreach organization for the Wikimedia projects.

The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as an ASL interpreter or captioning, please email BecauseOfHerStory@si.edu.

|description = Wikipedia is one of the most highly visited websites in the world, but representation of women of color is strikingly low—both in terms of who contributes to the site and the subjects they write about. Many local and national environmental justice women activists are not represented among Wikipedia's many biographies.

Join us to set the record straight, make some friends, and celebrate the activists who have fought to make our urban environments greener. No Wikipedia editing experience necessary; training will be provided.

|description = Join us for a virtual Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon that helps to highlight more artists and stories like those featured in the Smithsonian American Art Museum's landmark exhibition ¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now. The exhibition brings together five decades of innovative printmaking by Chicano artists to explore the social justice-rooted artistic tradition and its contemporary legacy. Many of the featured artists came of age during the civil rights era and channeled the period's social activism into assertive aesthetic statements that announced a new political and cultural consciousness among people of Mexican descent in the United States. Learn how to edit and create new Wikipedia articles in this online editing workshop and work to amplify and expand on articles about Chicanx women and LGBTQ+ artists. All levels of technological proficiency welcome.

|description = The Black in STEM Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon is a joint project between the nonprofit BlackComputeHER.org and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. BlackComputeHER.org is dedicated to supporting computer and tech education along with workforce development for African American girls and women. The National Museum of African American History and Culture recognizes that African Americans have contributed to the United States’ Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) enterprise since the nation’s beginning, yet their names and contributions have been routinely overlooked.

Over the course of two weeks, the Black in STEM Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon will be used to highlight African Americans STEM professionals, specifically, engineers, computer scientists and women in STEM throughout history. We look forward to creating and building information resources for all people interested in African American history and STEM.

|title = Food Safety and Modernization Act Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

|time = 10am –3pm

|place = Remote

|address =

|description = The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), enacted by Congress in 2011, is a comprehensive update of federal food safety laws. It addresses preventable foodborne illness, monitors the global food supply chain, and ensures human and animal food safety. Rather than a system that responds to foodborne illness, FSMA works to prevent it. Following its enactment, the FDA created seven comprehensive new regulations to enforce the law. These regulations touch on nearly every aspect of the food supply chain.

We will start the day with remarks from Paul Wester, Director of the National Agricultural Library, and follow with a panel of guests who will speak about the history, context, and future of FSMA. Following the speakers, we will hold a training session for those new to - or need a refresher on - Wikipedia editing. A worklist of FSMA topics and pages will be provided, including growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce; mandatory controls for food facilities; and monitoring and corrective action of intentional adulteration of food.

To close the day, we will hold a question and answer session.

This event is presented by the National Agricultural Library with support from Wikimedia DC.

|description = The World Health Organization has named vaccine hesitancy, or anti-vaccination, as one of the top ten threats to global health in 2019. At the same time, the spread of health-related misinformation has fueled concerns about the potential dangers or inefficacy of vaccines.

Wikipedia is an important resource for up-to-date, accurate vaccine information, and it is currently one of the most frequently visited sites for healthcare information worldwide. NewsQ’s KNoW Science initiative has partnered with the WHO’s Vaccine Safety Net and Wikimedia DC to help expand Wikipedia’s existing vaccine-related content.

As a part of these efforts KNoW Science and Wikimedia DC are organizing a Wikipedia edit-a-thon to evaluate and improve Wikimedia content about vaccines, including vaccine safety.

The event will be open to anyone interested in promoting accurate vaccine information online. Training will be provided -- so no experience is necessary to join the event!

|description = The stories of Black women in food can educate and embolden future generations, but only if their legacies are discoverable. On July 27 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Eastern, join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon that will address the marginalization and omission of Black women’s stories by creating or adding to Wikipedia articles about their personal histories and inspiring careers in food businesses, culinary education, writing, advocacy, philanthropy, and beyond.

Don’t know how to edit Wikipedia articles? No worries, we’ll train you during the event! With these new skills, you’ll be able to help us better represent and share the stories of women like LaDeva Davis (featured above) who had her own program on PBS in 1976 called, “What’s Cooking?” During the show, she prepared budget-friendly, highly nutritious meals that appealed to wide audiences. So popular was her show that PBS broadcast it in over 100 locations across the country, making Davis one of the first Black women to have her own nationally syndicated public TV cooking show on PBS.

Honoring her role in food TV history, the museum included Davis’ image on the “TV Chefs Wall” in the FOOD: Transforming the American Table exhibition.

|title = Edit-a-Thon for Democracy: Accountability for Lying to the Courts and Congress

|time = 12pm-3pm ET

|place = Online

|address = Online

|description = A healthy democracy requires that the public can reference a complete, trustworthy, and accessible historical record of events related to government activity and interactions between government officials and the people from whom they derive their authority. Beyond equipping people with the tools to better understand how various economic, social, and cultural dynamics influence our democratic infrastructure, history also provides clarity about various players within our political landscape and the impact they have had.

The period between 2017 and 2021 was tumultuous, and recent enough that its documentation on Wikipedia is incomplete. Given Wikipedia’s importance as one of the rare places where the American public can meet to both write and read a shared reality, Protect Democracy and Wikimedia DC are organizing a series of Edit-a-Thons centered on civic engagement and historical documentation. By recording the notable impact actors have had on the U.S.’s democracy and making it easily accessible, you can help empower the public with information of important past events, creating both a recognition of positive influence and accountability for misdeeds.

This first event of our series will focus on instances of actors misleading and obstructing the courts and Congress. During this Edit-a-Thon, training as well as suggested sources will be provided so that attendees of all experience levels—both in terms of Wikipedia editing and U.S. democracy—can participate.

|title = Advancing Equity Through Food and Nutrition Security Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

|time = 11am - 3pm

|place =

|address =

|description = The American food system is often unequal and inefficient; numerous agencies regulate it with little interconnection, resulting in a broad range of simultaneous issues: food insecurity and waste, obesity and hunger, and agriculture speeding climate change that threatens agriculture, among other issues. Laurie Beyranevand from the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems (CAFS) at Vermont Law School will discuss the Blueprint for a National Food Strategy and other CAFS resources. She will also examine opportunities for addressing equity-related food and nutrition issues and the need for a cohesive national approach to food system regulation through legal and scholarly research.

Our keynote speaker is Rev. Dr. Heber Brown III, Black Church Food Security Network founder. He will describe their work on connecting churches and Black farmers to create alternative food systems that address systemic issues of racism and climate change.

The afternoon session consists of an optional Wikipedia editing training session and editing time to focus on food systems and food insecurity.

Please register on Eventbrite. The confirmation email from Eventbrite will include the Zoom link and password to access the event. Full-day attendance is not required.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Increasing the Representation of Women in STEM

Description

Did you know that only 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women and only 10% of Wikipedia’s editors identify as women? In celebration of Smithsonian’s Women’s Futures Month, help improve the uneven representation of women in STEM and the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries during this Wikipedia edit-a-thon.

At this edit-a-thon, attendees of all experience levels collaborate to learn how to edit Wikipedia together by updating articles related to women in STEM from the #IfThenSheCan - The Exhibit, a collection of 120 statues of women in STEM. Rese Cloyd, Director of the Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology at AAAS, sets the stage by highlighting the importance of representation of women in STEM.

This event is presented by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative in conjunction with the #IfThenSheCan - The Exhibit.

WikiGap 2022 - Women, Health & Environment Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Description

Knowledge is power, and Wikipedia has the potential to colour our view of the world. But there is great imbalance between men and women on the website, like in society at large. There are four times as many articles about men as there are about women.

We want to change this.

Join us and help to close Wikipedia's gender gap by editing and creating Wikipedia articles about Women, Health & Environment.

Training for new Wikipedia editors will be provided.

This is a hybrid event with in-person sessions in New York and Washington, DC as well as a virtual session for those who wish to attend remotely. Please bring a laptop if planning to join us in-person.

The event is organized by Wikimedia DC, Wikimedia NYC, the Embassy of Sweden to the United States, Sweden’s Consulate General in New York, and the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations.

'''Schedule'''

09:00 – 09:45: Interactive Studio Chat with Sweden's UN Ambassador Anna Karin Eneström, Sweden's Consul General Camilla Mellander, Sweden's Ambassador to the US Karin Olofsdotter, and Ms. Åsa Regnér, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women.

09:45 – 10:30: Training session with Wikimedia

10:30 – 12:00: Edit-a-thon with Wikimedia (Participants, on sight and online, will create and edit Wikipedia articles about women in Wikimedia)

Together, we want to bring about a more gender-equal internet – and a more gender-equal world!

Join us to learn how to help increase the representation of Pacific Islander and Asian American people on Wikipedia

  +
This event will have two parts:
Take this opportunity to get involved with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC) and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative by joining us for the WikiAPA Edit-a-thon: Are Here Edition. This edition focuses on the stories of Pacific Islander and Asian American women, and nonbinary, transgender, and third gender people in APAC’s forthcoming anthology, We Are here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Shaped the United States, which will come out on October 18, 2022, from the Smithsonian Institution and Running Press Kids.

  +
1) Getting started with Wikipedia edits: 11am-12pm
  +
2) Wikipedia edit-a-thon: 12pm-2pm

  +
Attendees can join us for one of both parts depending on their availability and experience with Wikipedia editing. New editors are encouraged to attend the introductory session at 11am.
As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who are looking to learn about art, history, and science. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. There are considerable gaps on Wikipedia related to Asian American and Pacific Islander history as well as topics about transgender and nonbinary people. You can help correct these imbalances by contributing to Wikipedia.

  +
This event is presented with support from Wikimedia DC.
During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. No prior Wikipedia experience is required.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.

|place = Zoom

|description = Join Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative to enhance the presence of sculptors and women in Wikipedia.

As one of the internet’s most frequently visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many interested in learning about art, history, and the lives of artists. Yet many women artists whose important works are displayed in museums and galleries around the world have incomplete Wikipedia articles or no article at all. Sculptors are even less represented than painters in Wikipedia, increasing the likelihood of women sculptors being excluded. This problem can be corrected. Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that we can all help improve the quantity, quality, and accuracy of Wikipedia entries.

During this event, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by creating or updating articles related to the history of fifty women sculptural artists in the United States.

This event is cohosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in art history is required.

|description = Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.

  +
Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? Help change that by joining the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on June 20th for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon. Attendees will edit and create Wikipedia articles inspired by the life and work of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker.

  +
Dr. Walker, the first woman to serve as a U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War, a women’s rights advocate, and the only woman recipient of the Medal of Honor, is featured on a new quarter as part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters Program.
During this event, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by creating or updating articles related to the history of women's health in the United States.

  +
This event will have two parts:
This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian National American History Museum, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.

  +
1) Getting started with Wikipedia edits: 11am-12pm
  +
2) Wikipedia edit-a-thon: 12pm-2pm

  +
Attendees can join us for one of both parts depending on their availability and experience with Wikipedia editing. New editors are encouraged to attend the introductory session at 11am.
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in women's history is required.

Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum is working to change that and we need you to help share the stories of women who ensured the success of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and leaders in the banking industry who expanded services for women.
February 19 marks the anniversary of Executive Order 9066, an authorization signed by President Frankin Delano Roosevelt which led to the incarceration of over 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry to concentration camps during World War II. In honor of this Day of Remembrance, this WikiAPA Edit-a-thon will address the underrepresentation of Japanese and Japanese American women on Wikipedia and Wikidata, especially those who were incarcerated during World War II and were active in speaking out and writing about their experiences. Specifically, this events’ worklist has been inspired by the women found in Densho’s archives and collections. Densho’s namesake is a Japanese term meaning “to pass on to the next generation,” or to leave a legacy. By participating in this event, we hope you’ll join us in continuing these notable women’s legacies on Wikipedia.

|description = During this Edit-a-thon, any participant with computer and internet access can create or improve Wikipedia articles for 41 women of color featured in the exhibit This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World, on view at the Renwick Gallery until April 2, 2023. The exhibit marks the 50th anniversary of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery, the nation’s premier museum dedicated to American craft.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who want to learn about art and artists. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. These percentages are even lower for biographies of women artists who have engaged with historically marginalized craft practices like quilting, ceramics, and basketry.

This event is cohosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in art history is required. |description = Are you interested in the history of anthropology? A linked data nerd? Want to help connect Indigenous communities with their archival records within colonial repositories? Join a co-sponsored edit-a-thon event between the University of Maryland Center for Archival Futures (CAFe) and WikimediaDC to support the reworking of the Council on the Preservation of Anthropological Records guide to anthropological records. Specifically, this edit-a-thon will add and edit anthropologists’ records within Wikipedia, and then ensure that each anthropologist is linked with the Wikipedia records of the Indigenous communities and peoples with whom they worked. Once mapped in both Wikipedia and Wikidata, this work will inform the data within SNAC (Social Networks, Archival Contexts), a search platform for finding archival records, which through an IMLS grant, we are shaping to facilitate connections between Native communities and their archival records.

No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Training will be provided, taking place Friday, March 31st, 2023 from 10am-2pm. Open editing time will run from 11:30am to 2pm. If you've never edited before, please plan to arrive for the training session.

But did you know that only 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women and only 10% of Wikipedia’s editors identify as women? The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative (AWHI) is committed to help improve the uneven representation of women in STEM and the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries -- and you can help!

Before collaborating on the entries you’ll receive a Wikipedia training and hear from naturalist Dara M. Wilson, Co-Chair of the Black Birders Week Advisory Group. Attendees of all experience levels can participate! Wikipedia training will be provided.

New editors will learn about Wikipedia notability requirements, oversight practices, and basic editing functions.

In addition to learning how to edit Wikipedia, attendees will hear about the Analysis Responses Toolkit for Trust, an interactive tool that incorporates Wikipedia and other sources to help people engage in trust-building ways when discussing vaccine efficacy and other topics online.

The Wikipedia editing training session is one-hour long and will be offered once at the start the event. Please arrive on-time if you intend to learn how to edit Wikipedia.

|description = OpenGovHub is a host of a coworking space for good-government and data-oriented nonprofits. Wikimedia DC is a member organization. We can join for a happy hour there. Please RSVP to Wikimedia DC and we'll get you on the invitation list.
|description = Wikipedia is one of the most highly visited websites in the world, but representation of women of color is strikingly low—both in terms of who contributes to the site and the subjects they write about. Many local and national environmental justice women activists are not represented among Wikipedia's many biographies.
