|description = Wikipedia is one of the most highly visited websites in the world, but representation of women of color is strikingly low—both in terms of who contributes to the site and the subjects they write about. Many local and national environmental justice women activists are not represented among Wikipedia's many biographies.
|description = Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for visitors who want to learn more about a variety of topics.

|time = 12 PM – 4 PM

|place = Capital Areas Biospace

|address = Rockville, MD

|description = Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for visitors who want to learn more about a variety of topics.

This workshop will bring together DIY biologists and makers from across the DC area with experienced Wikipedians. Learn about emerging technologies like synthetic biology, nanotechnology, robotics, and more! Afterwards, we'll teach you how to improve Wikipedia articles on science and engineering topics of your choice.

As the web’s most visited reference site, Wikipedia is a starting point for both scientists and non-scientists to learn about technology topics. Wikipedia is openly editable, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. During this training, you will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia articles, and practice these skills with experienced Wikipedians.

Laptops are required. Please bring your own. Wikimedia DC has two laptops to loan; you can reserve one by emailing info@wikimediadc.org.

|description = Private event
|description = '''This event is presented by 500 Women Scientists DC'''. Ada Lovelace Day is an international day to celebrate the contributions of self-identifying women to science, technology, engineering, and math. So to celebrate their achievements, 500 Women Scientists and our allies, as well as the DC Science Writer's Association, are gathering at the West End DC Public Library on Saturday, October 13th to share their work on Wikipedia's pages.

While Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, notching up more than 32 million views a day, less than 18% of its English-language biographies are about women. So in honor of Ada Lovelace—and her contributions to mathematics and computing—we'll work to add more entries to Wikipedia and give you the tools to keep making the Internet less sexist after our Wiki-thon. All you have to do is come armed with a laptop or tablet!

|description = The theme for Women’s History Month this year at Georgetown University is “It’s all the Rage,” where we will engage feminist rage and emotion from intersectional lenses.
|description = Are you a history buff with a passion for agriculture? Do you often search for the evidence behind agricultural developments? Join us to learn more about the history of USDA research contributions by participating in a Wikipedia edit-a-thon!

  +
Did you know that only 15% of contributors to Wikipedia are women?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS), The National Archives, and Wikimedia DC invite Wikipedians of all levels of experience to participate in this historical research Edit-a-thon. Topics will include USDA research discoveries and developments, the progression and advancement of USDA research centers, the evolution of technology development for agricultural research, and highlights of notable research contributions.

  +
Did you know that women only appear in just over 20% of all images of human beings on Wikimedia Commons?
  +
Did you know efforts are happening around the world to address the “gender gap” on Wikipedia?

  +
Join the Georgetown community to help close this gender gap on Wikipedia by increasing the representation of underrepresented groups — in both Wikipedia content and contributors — on topics such as women in politics, women in STEM, and women in the arts. There will be hands-on training provided by representatives from Wikimedia DC.
During the event, participants will have the opportunity to hear from and meet with influential historians within USDA, librarians, and data science experts. They will also learn more about resources available through ARS and its National Agricultural Library.

This Wikipedia Edit-a-thon accompanies the exhibition, In the Library: The Evans-Tibbs Archive of African American Art, which showcases the life and work of Thurlow Evans Tibbs Jr., an accomplished art appraiser, broker, collector, and dealer, as well as the founder and director of his eponymous art gallery in Washington, DC. Tibbs is best known for his donation to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, now an important part of the National Gallery’s holdings by African American artists. To support his research, Tibbs amassed approximately more than a thousand reference files comprising more than seventy boxes of material documenting art of the African diaspora. Tibbs opened up his reference collection, now commonly known as the Evans-Tibbs Archive, to artists, students, and scholars. The archive includes correspondence, exhibition pamphlets, gallery records, photographs, and other ephemera that illustrate the history of the Tibbs family, The Evans-Tibbs Collection, and African American art.

|description = Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

Let’s change that. Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, as well as reference materials, coffee and lunch. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. |description = Until 1974, married women could not get credit cards in their own name. Join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on women, credit, and financial power to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which prohibited lenders from discriminating against consumers based on their sex or marital status.

  +
Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum is working to change that and we need you to help share the stories of women who ensured the success of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and leaders in the banking industry who expanded services for women.
|description = Join us for the Women in Natural History Wikipedia Editing Workshop hosted by the Biodiversity Heritage Library and Smithsonian Libraries with support from Wikimedia DC.

  +
This event will have two parts:
With the help of experienced Wikipedians, attendees will learn to edit Wikipedia and improve or create Wikipedia articles related to women in natural history, drawing on the Biodiversity Heritage Library's free and extensive online collections as source materials. No editing experience is necessary.

  +
Getting started with Wikipedia edits: 11 am - 12 pm
Laptops are required. Please bring your own. Wikimedia has two laptops to loan. Reserve one by emailing info@wikimediadc.org.

|description = Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.

During this training, attendees will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women's suffrage in the United States in connection with the Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. Votes for Women examines the women and organizations often overlooked in the American women’s suffrage movement and there will be resources on hand to add as citations. Beginners are very welcome and a range of Wikipedia editing techniques will be taught, with Wikimedia DC members on hand to help!

This is the first edit-a-thon in a series planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Women's Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.

Data has shown that less than 18% of biographies on English-language Wikipedia are about women. Help us change that by joining us on February 9 at the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument for a Wikipedia editing workshop. We will work together to improve and create Wikipedia content about black women who fought for the right to vote.
