This event is presented by 500 Women Scientists DC. Ada Lovelace Day is an international day to celebrate the contributions of self-identifying women to science, technology, engineering, and math. So to celebrate their achievements, 500 Women Scientists and our allies, as well as the DC Science Writer's Association, are gathering at the West End DC Public Library on Saturday, October 13th to share their work on Wikipedia's pages.
While Wikipedia is the fifth most popular website in the world, notching up more than 32 million views a day, less than 18% of its English-language biographies are about women. So in honor of Ada Lovelace—and her contributions to mathematics and computing—we'll work to add more entries to Wikipedia and give you the tools to keepf making the Internet less sexist after our Wiki-thon. All you have to do is come armed with a laptop or tablet!

Are you a history buff with a passion for agriculture? Do you often search for the evidence behind agricultural developments? Join us to learn more about the history of USDA research contributions by participating in a Wikipedia edit-a-thon!
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS), The National Archives, and Wikimedia DC invite Wikipedians of all levels of experience to participate in this historical research Edit-a-thon. Topics will include USDA research discoveries and developments, the progression and advancement of USDA research centers, the evolution of technology development for agricultural research, and highlights of notable research contributions.
During the event, participants will have the opportunity to hear from and meet with influential historians within USDA, librarians, and data science experts. They will also learn more about resources available through ARS and its National Agricultural Library.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

This Wikipedia Edit-a-thon accompanies the exhibition, In the Library: The Evans-Tibbs Archive of African American Art, which showcases the life and work of Thurlow Evans Tibbs Jr., an accomplished art appraiser, broker, collector, and dealer, as well as the founder and director of his eponymous art gallery in Washington, DC. Tibbs is best known for his donation to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, now an important part of the National Gallery’s holdings by African American artists. To support his research, Tibbs amassed approximately more than a thousand reference files comprising more than seventy boxes of material documenting art of the African diaspora. Tibbs opened up his reference collection, now commonly known as the Evans-Tibbs Archive, to artists, students, and scholars. The archive includes correspondence, exhibition pamphlets, gallery records, photographs, and other ephemera that illustrate the history of the Tibbs family, The Evans-Tibbs Collection, and African American art.
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. Reference materials from the library’s collection and the Evans-Tibbs Archive will be readily available.

Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.
Let’s change that. Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, as well as reference materials, coffee and lunch. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. During this training, attendees will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women's suffrage in the United States in connection with the Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery. Votes for Women examines the women and organizations often overlooked in the American women’s suffrage movement and there will be resources on hand to add as citations. Beginners are very welcome and a range of Wikipedia editing techniques will be taught, with Wikimedia DC members on hand to help!

Join us at the National Agriculture Library to help celebrate our 50th Anniversary in Beltsville and help to improve or create Wikipedia articles about the National Agricultural Library's history, as well as ARS/USDA history.
The National Agricultural Library(NAL), one of the world's largest agricultural research libraries, was established as part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1862, by Abraham Lincoln. The library was originally located at the headquarters building of the USDA until centralization of the library, and it's vast collections outgrew the Washington D.C. space. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson authorized an appropriation which enabled the Library to move and build a new 14-story building on site at the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC) in Beltsville,MD.
The National Agricultural Library invites Wikipedians of all levels of experience to participate in this edit-a-thon. Topics will include past librarians, USDA research discoveries and developments, the evolution of technology in conjunction with libraries, and highlights of notable research and research contributions represented within the library's special collections and stacks holdings.
During the event individuals will be able to hear from and meet influential historians within the USDA, librarians, and data science experts. They will also have the opportunity to learn more about resources available through ARS and the National Agricultural Library.

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.
During this training, attendees will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in STEM in the United States in connection with Ada Lovelace Day - an international event recognizing the achievements of women in STEM. Beginners are very welcome and a range of Wikipedia editing techniques will be taught, with Wikimedia DC members on hand to help! We will also have a set of images to upload to Wikimedia Commons for those who wish to learn the process of uploading and inserting images into Wikipedia pages.
This is the third edit-a-thon in a series planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States. #BecauseOfHerStory
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided.

Come participate in a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help tell the stories of women “trowelblazers” in the field of anthropology, drawing on collections held at the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives. Learn about the roles women played in some of the field’s major breakthroughs. Get to know anthropologists such as ethnomusicologist Francis Densmore, Standing Rock Sioux anthropologist and activist Beatrice Medicine, archaeologist Rose Solecki, and economic anthropologist Stanley Ann Dunham (mother of Barack Obama).

It’s the 150th Anniversary of John Wesley Powell's Expedition to explore the Colorado and Green Rivers! Come participate in a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to help tell the stories of "unsung heroes" of Powell's efforts, drawing on collections held at the Smithsonian’s National Anthropological Archives and Human Studies Film Archives, especially those of women and Native American collaborators.
No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Training and refreshments will be provided. Training in Wikipedia editing techniques will take place from 11am to 12:30pm, followed by a break for lunch. Open editing time will run from 1:30-4:30. If you've never edited before, please plan to arrive at 11 for a fabulous training session.

Data has shown that less than 18% of biographies on English-language Wikipedia are about women. Help to change that by joining us on January 14 for the Women's Suffrage Centennial Wikipedia Editing Workshop. Attendees will learn how to edit Wikipedia and work together to improve and create Wikipedia articles related women's suffrage in the United States.

Wikimedia DC is a cosponsor of the Public Domain Day celebration at American University's law school. There will be speakers including several allies of Wikimedia DC. Public Domain Day celebrates among other things the new materials which became free of US copyright on January 1.

Join the American Folklife Center on February 8th for a Edit-A-Thon to expand the online presence of women who documented the world. This event is part of its multi-year initiative to highlight, explore, and celebrate the contributions of women as ethnographic fieldworkers and scholars and call attention to the instrumental role of women in establishing many of the seminal collections that now enrich the AFC archive and ethnographic archives throughout the world. During the Edit-A-Thon, we plan to add and/or expand entries for approximately 25-30 women, both historic and contemporary, who documented traditional culture. We will focus of those whose collections are now housed in the AFC archive. Activities will be centered at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, but off-site participation is encouraged. AFC staff will be on hand to assist on-site and off-site researchers and provide archival materials.

Library staff will collaborate with the public to expand and improve information in Wikipedia, the world’s most-used reference source. While we will initially focus on women whose work is represented in Library collections, this event is designed to improve articles about any women photojournalists. Anyone with an interest in learning to use Wikipedia, or in researching women in the arts, is encouraged to attend. Library of Congress staff are excited to share their expertise on Library collections that bring women photojournalists and their work to life.
No experience with Wikipedia is necessary. Training will be provided by a DC area Wikipedian. (We also welcome active Wikipedia editors!)
The event is free, but we ask people to register to help us estimate attendance.
This event is part of a larger cluster of DC-Area Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons, which are presented with support from Wikimedia DC.
