Smithsonian Women in Finance Edit-a-thon
WHEN
- Thursday, October 29, 2020
1pm –3pm
WHERE
- VIRTUAL EVENT
Save the date for a virtual edit-a-thon on Women in Finance on Thursday, October 29th from 1:00-3:00pm EST where we will highlight women who have been trailblazers in finance, business, and entrepreneurship. The histories of women in these spaces is not well documented online, but they deserve to be told. Dr. Crystal M. Moten, curator of African American history in the division of Work and History at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, will speak about her work and the importance of telling her stories at the edit-a-thon.
During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the history of women in finance and business in the United States. Ariel Cetrone, Wikimedia DC, will lead the Wikipedia tutorial and beginners are welcome. Zoom link will be sent upon registration.
Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia articles. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science. Content on Wikipedia is not even, currently only 18% of biographies are about women. Help us correct that imbalance by editing articles about women on Wikipedia.
This event is collaboratively planned by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States and Wikimedia DC, the regional outreach organization for the Wikimedia projects.
The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as an ASL interpreter or captioning, please email BecauseOfHerStory@si.edu. Learn more »

Food Safety and Modernization Act Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
WHEN
- Tuesday, March 23, 2021
10am –3pm
WHERE
- VIRTUAL EVENT
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), enacted by Congress in 2011, is a comprehensive update of federal food safety laws. It addresses preventable foodborne illness, monitors the global food supply chain, and ensures human and animal food safety. Rather than a system that responds to foodborne illness, FSMA works to prevent it. Following its enactment, the FDA created seven comprehensive new regulations to enforce the law. These regulations touch on nearly every aspect of the food supply chain.
We will start the day with remarks from Paul Wester, Director of the National Agricultural Library, and follow with a panel of guests who will speak about the history, context, and future of FSMA. Following the speakers, we will hold a training session for those new to - or need a refresher on - Wikipedia editing. A worklist of FSMA topics and pages will be provided, including growing, harvesting, packing, and holding of produce; mandatory controls for food facilities; and monitoring and corrective action of intentional adulteration of food.
To close the day, we will hold a question and answer session.
This event is presented by the National Agricultural Library with support from Wikimedia DC. Learn more »

WHEN
- Tuesday, July 27, 2021
1:00 – 3:30pm eastern time
WHERE
- VIRTUAL EVENT
The stories of Black women in food can educate and embolden future generations, but only if their legacies are discoverable. On July 27 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Eastern, join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon that will address the marginalization and omission of Black women’s stories by creating or adding to Wikipedia articles about their personal histories and inspiring careers in food businesses, culinary education, writing, advocacy, philanthropy, and beyond.
Don’t know how to edit Wikipedia articles? No worries, we’ll train you during the event! With these new skills, you’ll be able to help us better represent and share the stories of women like LaDeva Davis (featured above) who had her own program on PBS in 1976 called, “What’s Cooking?” During the show, she prepared budget-friendly, highly nutritious meals that appealed to wide audiences. So popular was her show that PBS broadcast it in over 100 locations across the country, making Davis one of the first Black women to have her own nationally syndicated public TV cooking show on PBS.
Honoring her role in food TV history, the museum included Davis’ image on the “TV Chefs Wall” in the FOOD: Transforming the American Table exhibition. Learn more »

Edit-a-Thon for Democracy: Accountability for Lying to the Courts and Congress
WHEN
- Wednesday, November 10, 2021
12pm-3pm ET
WHERE
- VIRTUAL EVENT
A healthy democracy requires that the public can reference a complete, trustworthy, and accessible historical record of events related to government activity and interactions between government officials and the people from whom they derive their authority. Beyond equipping people with the tools to better understand how various economic, social, and cultural dynamics influence our democratic infrastructure, history also provides clarity about various players within our political landscape and the impact they have had.
The period between 2017 and 2021 was tumultuous, and recent enough that its documentation on Wikipedia is incomplete. Given Wikipedia’s importance as one of the rare places where the American public can meet to both write and read a shared reality, Protect Democracy and Wikimedia DC are organizing a series of Edit-a-Thons centered on civic engagement and historical documentation. By recording the notable impact actors have had on the U.S.’s democracy and making it easily accessible, you can help empower the public with information of important past events, creating both a recognition of positive influence and accountability for misdeeds.
This first event of our series will focus on instances of actors misleading and obstructing the courts and Congress. During this Edit-a-Thon, training as well as suggested sources will be provided so that attendees of all experience levels—both in terms of Wikipedia editing and U.S. democracy—can participate.

WHERE
- VIRTUAL EVENT
The stories of Black women in food can educate and embolden future generations, but only if their legacies are discoverable. Our Wikipedia edit-a-thon will address the marginalization and omission of Black women’s stories by creating or editing Wikipedia articles about their personal histories and inspiring careers in food businesses, culinary education, writing, advocacy, philanthropy, and beyond. This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
