|title = Edit-a-Thon for Democracy: Accountability for Lying to the Courts and Congress

|time = 12pm-3pm ET

|place = Online

|address = Online

|description = A healthy democracy requires that the public can reference a complete, trustworthy, and accessible historical record of events related to government activity and interactions between government officials and the people from whom they derive their authority. Beyond equipping people with the tools to better understand how various economic, social, and cultural dynamics influence our democratic infrastructure, history also provides clarity about various players within our political landscape and the impact they have had.

The period between 2017 and 2021 was tumultuous, and recent enough that its documentation on Wikipedia is incomplete. Given Wikipedia’s importance as one of the rare places where the American public can meet to both write and read a shared reality, Protect Democracy and Wikimedia DC are organizing a series of Edit-a-Thons centered on civic engagement and historical documentation. By recording the notable impact actors have had on the U.S.’s democracy and making it easily accessible, you can help empower the public with information of important past events, creating both a recognition of positive influence and accountability for misdeeds.

This first event of our series will focus on instances of actors misleading and obstructing the courts and Congress. During this Edit-a-Thon, training as well as suggested sources will be provided so that attendees of all experience levels—both in terms of Wikipedia editing and U.S. democracy—can participate.

|title = Advancing Equity Through Food and Nutrition Security Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon

|time = 11am - 3pm

|place =

|address =

|description = The American food system is often unequal and inefficient; numerous agencies regulate it with little interconnection, resulting in a broad range of simultaneous issues: food insecurity and waste, obesity and hunger, and agriculture speeding climate change that threatens agriculture, among other issues. Laurie Beyranevand from the Center for Agriculture and Food Systems (CAFS) at Vermont Law School will discuss the Blueprint for a National Food Strategy and other CAFS resources. She will also examine opportunities for addressing equity-related food and nutrition issues and the need for a cohesive national approach to food system regulation through legal and scholarly research.

Our keynote speaker is Rev. Dr. Heber Brown III, Black Church Food Security Network founder. He will describe their work on connecting churches and Black farmers to create alternative food systems that address systemic issues of racism and climate change.

The afternoon session consists of an optional Wikipedia editing training session and editing time to focus on food systems and food insecurity.

Please register on Eventbrite. The confirmation email from Eventbrite will include the Zoom link and password to access the event. Full-day attendance is not required.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon: Increasing the Representation of Women in STEM

Description

Did you know that only 19% of biographies on Wikipedia are about women and only 10% of Wikipedia’s editors identify as women? In celebration of Smithsonian’s Women’s Futures Month, help improve the uneven representation of women in STEM and the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries during this Wikipedia edit-a-thon.

At this edit-a-thon, attendees of all experience levels collaborate to learn how to edit Wikipedia together by updating articles related to women in STEM from the #IfThenSheCan - The Exhibit, a collection of 120 statues of women in STEM. Rese Cloyd, Director of the Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology at AAAS, sets the stage by highlighting the importance of representation of women in STEM.

This event is presented by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative in conjunction with the #IfThenSheCan - The Exhibit.

WikiGap 2022 - Women, Health & Environment Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Description

Knowledge is power, and Wikipedia has the potential to colour our view of the world. But there is great imbalance between men and women on the website, like in society at large. There are four times as many articles about men as there are about women.

We want to change this.

Join us and help to close Wikipedia's gender gap by editing and creating Wikipedia articles about Women, Health & Environment.

Training for new Wikipedia editors will be provided.

This is a hybrid event with in-person sessions in New York and Washington, DC as well as a virtual session for those who wish to attend remotely. Please bring a laptop if planning to join us in-person.

The event is organized by Wikimedia DC, Wikimedia NYC, the Embassy of Sweden to the United States, Sweden’s Consulate General in New York, and the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations.

'''Schedule'''

09:00 – 09:45: Interactive Studio Chat with Sweden's UN Ambassador Anna Karin Eneström, Sweden's Consul General Camilla Mellander, Sweden's Ambassador to the US Karin Olofsdotter, and Ms. Åsa Regnér, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women.

09:45 – 10:30: Training session with Wikimedia

10:30 – 12:00: Edit-a-thon with Wikimedia (Participants, on sight and online, will create and edit Wikipedia articles about women in Wikimedia)

Together, we want to bring about a more gender-equal internet – and a more gender-equal world!

|time = 1:00 PM-3:30 PM

|place =

|description =

Join us to learn how to help increase the representation of Pacific Islander and Asian American people on Wikipedia

Take this opportunity to get involved with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC) and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative by joining us for the WikiAPA Edit-a-thon: Are Here Edition. This edition focuses on the stories of Pacific Islander and Asian American women, and nonbinary, transgender, and third gender people in APAC’s forthcoming anthology, We Are here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Shaped the United States, which will come out on October 18, 2022, from the Smithsonian Institution and Running Press Kids.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who are looking to learn about art, history, and science. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. There are considerable gaps on Wikipedia related to Asian American and Pacific Islander history as well as topics about transgender and nonbinary people. You can help correct these imbalances by contributing to Wikipedia.

During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. No prior Wikipedia experience is required.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.

|title = Fifty Women Sculptors: A Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

|time = 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT

|place = Zoom

|address =

|description = Join Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative to enhance the presence of sculptors and women in Wikipedia.

As one of the internet’s most frequently visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many interested in learning about art, history, and the lives of artists. Yet many women artists whose important works are displayed in museums and galleries around the world have incomplete Wikipedia articles or no article at all. Sculptors are even less represented than painters in Wikipedia, increasing the likelihood of women sculptors being excluded. This problem can be corrected. Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that we can all help improve the quantity, quality, and accuracy of Wikipedia entries.

During this event, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by creating or updating articles related to the history of fifty women sculptural artists in the United States.

This event is cohosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in art history is required.

|address =

|description = Take this opportunity to get involved with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC), Densho, and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative by joining us for the WikiAPA Edit-a-thon: with Densho, the Japanese American Legacy Project!

February 19 marks the anniversary of Executive Order 9066, an authorization signed by President Frankin Delano Roosevelt which led to the incarceration of over 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry to concentration camps during World War II. In honor of this Day of Remembrance, this WikiAPA Edit-a-thon will address the underrepresentation of Japanese and Japanese American women on Wikipedia and Wikidata, especially those who were incarcerated during World War II and were active in speaking out and writing about their experiences. Specifically, this events’ worklist has been inspired by the women found in Densho’s archives and collections. Densho’s namesake is a Japanese term meaning “to pass on to the next generation,” or to leave a legacy. By participating in this event, we hope you’ll join us in continuing these notable women’s legacies on Wikipedia.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who are looking to learn about art, history, and science. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. There are also considerable gaps on Wikipedia related to Asian American and Pacific Islander history.

To fill the gap, this event encourages the collaboration between the public and cultural heritage professionals to contribute their knowledge and expertise. During this event, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related to the Densho’s archives and collections.

This event is planned in conjunction with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, Densho, the Japanese American history non-profit, and the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative, a multiyear undertaking to document, research, collect, display, and share the history of women in the United States.

|description = During this Edit-a-thon, any participant with computer and internet access can create or improve Wikipedia articles for 41 women of color featured in the exhibit This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World, on view at the Renwick Gallery until April 2, 2023. The exhibit marks the 50th anniversary of the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery, the nation’s premier museum dedicated to American craft.

As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many who want to learn about art and artists. However, less than 19% of Wikipedia biographies in English represent women, and less than 10% of Wikipedia editors identify as women. These percentages are even lower for biographies of women artists who have engaged with historically marginalized craft practices like quilting, ceramics, and basketry.

This event is cohosted by the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary; training will be provided. No background in art history is required. Join a co-sponsored edit-a-thon event between the University of Maryland Center for Archival Futures (CAFe) and WikimediaDC to support the reworking of the Council on the Preservation of Anthropological Records guide to anthropological records. Specifically, this edit-a-thon will add and edit anthropologists’ records within Wikipedia, and then ensure that each anthropologist is linked with the Wikipedia records of the Indigenous communities and peoples with whom they worked. Once mapped in both Wikipedia and Wikidata, this work will inform the data within SNAC (Social Networks, Archival Contexts), a search platform for finding archival records, which through an IMLS grant, we are shaping to facilitate connections between Native communities and their archival records.

No Wikipedia editing experience necessary. Training will be provided, taking place Friday, March 31st, 2023 from 10am-2pm. Open editing time will run from 11:30am to 2pm. If you've never edited before, please plan to arrive for the training session.

The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative (AWHI) is committed to help improve the uneven representation of women in STEM and the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries -- and you can help!

As the world’s largest online Encyclopedia, Wikipedia is often one’s first stop when seeking information. For this reason, it is vital that content shared there remains accurate and free of mis- and disinformation.

Wikimedia DC, an official chapter affiliate of Wikipedia and other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, will facilitate an edit-a-thon with the goal of creating and improving Wikipedia content about scientific topics. Editors of all experience levels are invited to participate.

New editors will learn about Wikipedia notability requirements, oversight practices, and basic editing functions.

In addition to learning how to edit Wikipedia, attendees will hear about the Analysis Responses Toolkit for Trust, an interactive tool that incorporates Wikipedia and other sources to help people engage in trust-building ways when discussing vaccine efficacy and other topics online.

The Wikipedia editing training session is one-hour long and will be offered once at the start the event. Please arrive on-time if you intend to learn how to edit Wikipedia.
