Description of purpose

Please tell us a little about the project or activity for which you are requesting funding. Please provide enough detail to allow us to evaluate how your request aligns with our charitable mission.

(5) What is the purpose for which the funding will be used?

This grant is for the first of what may become 2 video projects.

  • The first video is intended to be a compact introduction to the mechanics of using VisualEditor that is only a few minutes in length. The target audience is workshop attendees, but other audiences like students in Wikipedia education programs may also want to view the video. The second video, which has more elaborate production requirements, will build off of the first video.
  • The second video will be an overview and tutorial about Wikipedia editing that has a similar scope to the Wikipedia Adventure, and may be 30 to 60 minutes in length. If production for the second video goes forward then these tools for the first video can also be used in the production of the second. There may be additional funding requests for the second video, for example if we want to do interviews or include video of events. Producing high-quality videos of interviews or events may involve some expensive equipment purchases. However we may produce early versions of this video that don't include recordings of interviews or live events, and then iterate to later versions that are more sophisticated.
(6) How does this purpose align with our mission?
These videos will educate the public about Wikipedia in general, and particularly how to edit English Wikipedia using VisualEditor. This will support the advancement of general knowledge and educational content under a free license.

Grant financials

Please tell us a little about the funding you need. To expedite review of your application, please provide as much detail as possible.

(7) How much funding do you need?
$360.02 including tax
(8) When will you need funding?
Can take delivery immediately. The goal is to have at least an early version of the shorter video available for use by mid-April for Wikipedia workshops in Seattle.
(9) What specific costs will the funding cover?
  • CyberLink PowerDirector 13 Ultimate Suite software bundle: $169.99 + tax, taking advantage of a 30% off Easter sale on the CyberLink site. PowerDirector won a PC Magazine Editor's Choice award over Adobe Premiere and other competitors, and in my conversations with the Free Software community no one has been able to find a good open source video editing tool, so I believe that this is the best option.
  • Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone: $59.79 + tax from B&H
  • Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Monitor Headphones (Black): $99 + tax from B&H
