Background
Wikimedia District of Columbia is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. We are the regional outreach organization for Wikipedia and the other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, including Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. Our mission is to promote participation on Wikimedia projects in the Washington, DC area and throughout the United States.
Institutional partnerships are one of our core program areas. In 2015–16, we worked with 27 different partner institutions, including museums, universities, and professional associations, ranging from local organizations such as the Laurel Historical Society to those of national profile like the Smithsonian Institution and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Our partnerships have focused largely on “edit-a-thons,” day-long events that train partner staff and members of the general public on editing Wikipedia.
Institutional partnerships have historically been the most successful and high-impact of Wikimedia District of Columbia's program areas, with sustained growth in program footprint, partnership quantity and quality, and program participation and impact to content over the past several years. Our annual plan for 2016–17 anticipates the continued expansion of this program area, with a 25% increase in the total number of collaborative editing events.
